Meet Ruth: The AI PhD, Photography Enthusiast, and Active Adventurer

Meet my family

Welcome to a glimpse into my life! My name is Ruth Bergman, and I’m thrilled to share my journey and the experiences that have shaped who I am today.

I am currently 58 years old and call the picturesque coastal town of Caesarea, Israel, home. This vibrant location is rich with history and stunning views and the sea reminds me that every day is unique and special.

As a proud partner to Oren Bergman, a professor of physics specializing in string theory, I often joke that he shares some traits with Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory—but just a little! Oren's intellectual pursuits and unique sense of humor really enhance our lives together.

With two amazing adult children, aged 29 and 26, I have experienced the joys and challenges of motherhood firsthand. Their dreams and ambitions inspire me every day, and I cherish our time together.

My life has brought me across diverse landscapes—from Haifa to various locations throughout the United States. Living on both coasts allowed me to experience a mix of cultures, climates, and lifestyles. For instance, experiencing historic Boston and the tech-savvy environment of Silicon Valley, where innovation thrives, has truly enriched my perspective on life.

My Passion for Artificial Intelligence

I earned my PhD in artificial intelligence back in 1996, an era when AI was more of a fantasy than a reality. Reflecting on my journey in this field fills me with gratitude. Over the past 30 years, I’ve witnessed incredible advancements, from basic algorithms to the cutting-edge machine learning systems we see today.

AI influences nearly every aspect of our lives. In fact, I am using AI right now to improve my writing, which my PhD advisor once called terse. I find the AI adds a lot of adjectives and elaborations that I would probably have not considered. It does require some editing, though.

Staying motivated in AI’s rapidly evolving landscape is invigorating and rewarding. My work for the past several years has been on practical applications for healthcare, and although that industry is slow to change, we have made some progress.

Hobbies that Enrich My Life

In addition to my professional pursuits, I immerse myself in hobbies that bring joy and creativity to my life. Photography, for example, allows me to capture the breathtaking beauty of the world around me.

Whether I’m photographing a stunning sunset or focusing on the intricate details of tropical plants in my garden, every moment is an opportunity to express myself creatively. Photography not only enriches my life but also helps me document experiences and emotions.

Traveling is another passion that fuels my creativity. I've visited numerous countries, such as Italy, Iceland, and Portugal, each offering unique experiences and flavors. Exploring new cultures, tasting local foods, and immersing myself in different environments continuously inspires me.

Kayaking, biking, and hiking are outdoor activities I cherish. For instance, a recent hike through Joshua Tree National Park challenged me physically but also provided peaceful moments surrounded by nature. Each activity connects me with my surroundings and helps me maintain a balanced life.

Embracing the Present

Life is a delicate equilibrium of work, family, and hobbies. Over the years, I’ve learned the importance of finding time for myself despite the daily hustle and bustle.

In my 58 years, I've seen the world transform in incredible ways—from the internet’s rise to breakthroughs in AI. Acknowledging this transformation has taught me the value of living in the moment and engaging fully with life as it unfolds.

At this stage in my life, I embrace adventure and welcome the unknown. Life’s most beautiful memories often stem from exploring uncharted territories, whether it's a new hiking trail or a bustling market in a distant city.
